VVS Laxman was among the runs for the second time in two days as Dravid XI beat Sehwag XI by five wickets at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore in a day-night benefit game for David Johnson, the former Karnataka fast bowler. The match also served as practice for the players, and gave another opportunity for the selectors to look at the probables before selecting the squad for the Indian Oil triangular one-day tournament in Sri Lanka. Laxman did his cause no harm, adding a 77-ball 76 to the 101 he had scored in the first practice match on Saturday.
Virender Sehwag and Venugopal Rao were the other batsmen to make the most of the opportunity - Sehwag slammed 96 off just 77 balls after his team was put in to bat. However, the rest of the top order failed to fire as they slumped to 108 for 4 before Venugopal bailed them out with a well-paced 91. That allowed Sehwag XI to set an imposing target of 303, but Dravid XI replied in style, with their openers, Gautam Gambhir and Laxman putting together 107 in less than 16 overs. Rain interrupted their progress for a while, but Yuvraj Singh and Rahul Dravid then played fine cameos to ensure that the revised target of 240 was achieved with five wickets and ten balls to spare.
