NEW ZEALAND LIVE TO FIGHT ONE MORE DAY

New Zealand's struggle to avoid innings defeat and series loss against South Africa will extend into the fifth and final day at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, tomorrow. At stumps on Sunday, New Zealand need 59 more runs to make South Africa bat again, with three wickets in hand.

As expected, Hansie Cronje declared overnight with the score on 498 for 8, a lead of 276. An early finish looked possible as New Zealand lost their first three wickets within twelve overs of the start of play. Young (2) was caught behind trying unsuccessfully to fend a superb rising ball from Pollock. Twose (5) skied a hook shot off Elworthy straight to Pollock at fine leg. Horne, who had played a lively knock for his 27, was beaten later in the same over by a ball moving in off the seam and trapping him lbw. New Zealand 35 for 3.

A chancy partnership between Nathan Astle and Gary Stead ended with the score on 100. Stead was caught plumb lbw as Elworthy gained more movement. Stead had scored 35.

Astle brought up his 50 from 109 deliveries, a shaky innings despite some attractive boundaries. With Chris Harris joining Astle at the crease after Stead's dismissal, tight bowling saw just 71 runs scored between lunch and tea.

Elworthy exploited movement off the seam yet again in bowling Astle (62) shortly after the tea break. With Adams and Kallis tightening the screws, Parore fell for 19 to a brilliant bat-pad catch by Jonty Rhodes of the leftarm spinner. Adams clean bowled Harris in his next over. Harris' 41 included four fours, one six off Elworthy, and a five which included four overthrows.

Nash (4*) and Vettori (12*) played out the rest of the day, bad light ending play one over earlier than scheduled, the end of daylight savings last night meaning that sunset is arriving one hour earlier, the floodlights at the Basin Reserve not being strong enough to alleviate the fading light.

Steve Elworthy (4/66 and 4/58) is making the most of the absence of Allan Donald in this match, the prospect of a ten-wicket game still alive. Elworthy was able to take advantage of his height, Nathan Astle saying in the evening press conference that Elworthy was releasing the ball from above the line of the sightscreen.

The main threat to a South African victory is the weather, with rain forecast for tomorrow. New Zealand's ability to remain at the crease till stumps today may prove valuable.

TIKOLO'S TON BRINGS KENYA VICTORY

African lion Kenya again proved their mettle with a crushing eight wickets win against hosts Bangladesh in the second match of the Meril International Cricket Tournament at the Bangabandhu National Stadium Saturday.

This was ICC Trophy runners-up Kenya's third victory against Bangladesh, but their first on Bangladesh soil since earning official one-day status.

Bangladesh, the ICC Trophy champions, earned a solitary victory in one-day international and that was against Kenya last year in India. They so far have played 27 matches while Kenya notched six wins in 22 ODI.

In the day's match, first drop Stephen Tikolo made his maiden one-day century contributing 118 runs with Maurice Odumbe in the unconquered third wicket stand guiding Kenya to an easy victory making 215 runs with 6.1 overs to spare.

Tikolo, whose earlier best was 96, hit 13 fours today for his 106 runs off 111 balls while Odumbe scored run-a-ball 58 runs with four boundaries.

The difference between the two sides was the two Kenyans' running between the wicket. They always kept Bangladesh fielders under pressure taking quick singles.

Tikolo made the half century facing 66 deliveries with six hits to the fence and reached his hundred playing 110 balls with a boundary over the midwicket off Hasibul Hossain Shanta. Odumbe, the stroke maker of the Kenyan team, played a brilliant innings that featured four boundaries. He completed his run-a-ball fifty with three hits across the rope.

Kenya, which already had two creditable victories against former world champions West Indies and India, proved their prowess in all departments against Bangladesh, an aspirant for test status.

Earlier, winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam Bulbul decided to bat first and finished their 50-over quota making a modest 213 runs losing all wickets.

The only highlight of the Bangladesh innings was Shahriar Hossain Bidyut's 95 runs, the highest by any Bangladeshi batsman in ODI. The previous best was 82 runs made by Athar Ali Khan. Bidyut missed his maiden century as he fell victim of lbw to left-arm spinner Mohhamed Sheikh, but before his dismissal, hit eight boundaries playing 145 balls.

Bangladesh started their innings very slowly and reached the hundred mark in 30 overs losing two wickets. Opener Javed Omar Belim Gulla played a particularly shaky innings scoring 25 runs off 61 balls. The middle-order of Bangladesh failed to repair the early setback and could not make a fighting total.

Left-arm spinner Mohammed Sheikh was the most successful Kenyan bowler, who claimed three wickets for 36 runs in 8 overs while Thomas Odoyo, Maurice Odumbe and skipper Asif Karim picked up two wickets each.

CRUNCH TIME FOR WARNE AS LANGER SCORES TON

One selection issue was settled for Australia's Third Test team yesterday. Justin Langer scored 134 against West Indies "A" to end his run of low scores. Matthew Elliott made a duck, but so did the player who could well have replaced him as opener - Greg Blewett. As the WI team bat on Sunday, the spotlight falls on Shane Warne, who will be bowling for his place in the Austtralian eleven.

Carl Hooper, captaining West Indies A in his first match since returning from Adelaide, South Australia, where he had been with his unwell son, won the toss in the four-day match at the Antigua Recreation Ground and sent the Australians into bat. Australia, for this game, rested Mark Waugh, Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie, while Andy Bichel was yet again a spectator at a time when Queensland is struggling in the Sheffield Shield final back home. All three Australian spinners, Warne, MacGill and Miller, were in the eleven.

Matthew Elliott hit a return catch to Franklyn Rose without scoring. His place in the team for the Third Test beginning at Bridgetown, Barbados next Saturday looks particularly uncertain. Michael Slater made 21 before becoming Rose's second victim. Ricky Ponting scored 43 before becoming Carl Hooper's first victim of the day. Ponting will play in the Third Test, it is just a matter of who he replaces, but it won't be Justin Langer.

After the dismissal of Steve Waugh for 7, Greg Blewett fell for nought, caught by Chris Gayle off the bowling of left-arm spinner Anthony Lake. Blewett's place in the Test side is not in danger, however. Langer and Healy added 92 in 84 minutes before the Australian wicketkeeper fell for 42 to a fine catch by Hooper. Warne, whose batting seems to be improving in direct proportion to his danger of being dropped from the side, scored 33. Warne hit one six out of the ground, forcing the replacement of the ball.

Langer finished with 134, his 28th first-class century, and his first halfcentury of the tour. While his Third Test spot is safe, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he will be forced to move to Elliott's spot as opener.

With Australia being dismissed for 303, Carl Hooper cleaned up the tail to finish with 5/53. His return to the West Indies side would probably allow the selectors to choose a fourth paceman for the Barbados Test. Rose took 2/41 from his eleven overs yesterday.

West Indies A faced seventeen overs before stumps to end the day at 45 for 2. Chris Gayle (11) and Reynold McLean (0) were both victims of Colin Miller, who shared the new ball with Adam Dale. Miller will be expected to switch from medium pace to off spin at some stage tomorrow. Stuart Williams was unbeaten at the end of the day on 21, with Hooper on 10.

The West Indies Cricket Board announced on Friday night that Brian Lara has been confirmed as captain for the remaining two Tests against Australia and the following seven-match one-day series. Lara has been rested from the Trinidad & Tobago side for this weekend's Busta Cup final against Barbados, but is in no doubt of taking the field in charge of the West Indies side next Friday.

BJ BLASTS WARRIORS TO SHIELD LEAD

Brendon Julian blasted a brilliant 84 off 70 deliveries today as Western Australia took a 160-run first innings lead over Queensland on day three of the Sheffield Shield final at The Gabba, Brisbane. The Bulls reduced the deficit by 32 runs late in the day Sunday for the loss of Matthew Hayden's wicket on the last ball before stumps.

Western Australia must score an outright win to claim the Shield. Anything else will give Queensland victory, and with two days remaining, rain is threatening.

Beginning the day on 2/138, Simon Katich and Damien Martyn advanced their third-wicket partnership to 182 before Martyn was caught behind by wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe off Stuart Law for 83. Katich completed a fine century before being caught behind off Kasprowicz for 115. Left-hander Katich must be a fringe candidate for higher honours in the 1999-2000 season.

Moody (41), Baker (20) and Gilchrist (23) all fell to off-spinner Andrew Symonds before Julian dominated a 94-run eight wicket stand with Jo Angel. Julian smashed eight fours and four sixes, bringing up his 50 from just 38 balls. He was bowled by Symonds to be the Queenslander's fourth wicket of the innings. The score had advanced to 9/425 when Warriors captain Tom Moody declared about an hour before stumps.

Matthew Hayden took to the WA attack early in Queensland's second innings before being given lbw off Damien Martyn when 25. Television replays showed that Hayden had edged the ball onto his pads, something not considered by umpire Harper.
